Each time I have the opportunity to apply for a residency in an unknown city I have to project my experiences of other cities to develop ways of familiarizing myself with life in a new place. Often familiarization is estab- lished by applying routines that were developed in previous residencies to the new city to be experienced. With the residency opportunity offered by PROGRAM I began to reflect on what the experience of living in a city that used to be divided could be. These thoughts rapidly developed into the idea of imagining or projecting a Fantasy Residency in North Korea from the experience of living in Berlin.
None of the photographs in this book were taken in North Korea. The images are actually taken during walking events developed as the Lets Walk and Chat Together: Family Mart Social Berlin chapter, a project I conduc- ted throughout the city with local people as a way of getting to know the locality.
These events were devised as an introduction to the city through the establishment of a more personal connection to the architecture and history by means of an exploration and excavation of the different historical and social layers with which I could better explore the notions of a divided city.
The walk was conducted several times and was open to whoever wished to participate. I asked ‘Berliners’ to invite me to walk or follow them as they introduced me to their favorite sites, or to the ones they considered most emblematic. I even offered to be available 24 hours.
