Artists’ Documents: Art, Typography and Collaboration is an exhibition that examines the current state of artist-made books, in specific the Amsterdam based art publishing house Roma Publications. Artists have produced books of many types to record and share information about their work. With their unique characteristics, artist ’s books have become artworks into themselves, served as stages for experimentation through work with various collaborators, and undergone expansion into different ways of distribution from free posters to comprehensive books.
Roma Publications started in 1998 as a publishing project founded in Arnhem by graphic designer Roger Willems, artists Mark Manders and Marc Nagtzaam. With its sophisticated designs and superior materials, it quickly established itself as an influential platform for art publishing. The focus of this exhibition is a look back on the books that Roma Publications developed between 1998 and May 2016. What makes the exhibition even more interesting, it is the fact that works by five artists who have used Roma Publications as their publishing platform in the past and the present - Kees Goudzwaard, Bart Lodewijks, Mark Manders, Marc Nagtzaam, and Batia Suter - are presented side by side in the same plane as the books.
In 2008 and 2009, exhibitions were held at Seoul’s ZeroOne Design Center for the Dutch graphic designers Mevis & Van Deursen and the Arnhem-based Werkplaats Typografie, which had unpredicted influence on the local visual art scene and Korean design. It is impossible to forsee what this exhibition’s future effects will be. In 2006, Roma Publications staged an exhibition in Lisbon titled Book Makes Friends, showing their 90 publications so far. Now, 10 years later, with 272 publications in total, it’s interesting to see what roots it lays down in Korean art publishing.

《예술가의 문서들: 예술, 타이포그래피 그리고 협업》은 암스테르담에 위치한 로마 퍼블리케이션스를 통해 예술가가 만든 책의 현황을 묻는 전시다. 예술가는 작품의 정보를 기록하고 공유하기 위해 다양한 형식의 책을 만들어왔고, 예술가의 책은 작품이나 실험의 무대가 되기도 하고 다른 매체를 포용하면서 발전해왔다.
로마 퍼블리케이션스는 1998 년 그래픽 디자이너 로허르 빌럼스와 작가 마르크 만더르스, 마르크 나흐참이 함께 설립한 출판 프로젝트다. 그들은 정교한 디자인과 뛰어난 물성을 바탕으로, 빠른 시간 안에 영향력 있는 예술 출판 플랫폼으로 자리 잡았다. 이 전시는 1998년부터 2016년 5월까지 로마가 출판한 책들을 돌아보는 것에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 또한 로마를 자신의 출판 플랫폼으로 활용해 온 현대미술작가인 케이스 하우츠바르트, 바르트 로데베이크스, 마르크 만더르스, 마르크 나흐참, 그리고 바티아 쉬터르의 작품들이 책과 동일한 공간에서 전시된다.
2007년과 2008 년 서울 제로원디자인센터에서는 네덜란드 그래픽 디자이너 메비스 & 판 되르센과 아른험의 베르크플라츠 티포흐라피의 전시가 있었다. 이 전시 이후 8년이 지났는데 그 사이 서울의 예술 출판과 디자인 씬에는 많은 사건이 있었다. 제로원디자인센터에서 있었던 전시가 한국의 시각예술과 예술 출판계에 많은 변화를 이끌어 냈듯이, 이번 전시도 2016 년 한국 예술계에 새로운 활력을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 2006 년 로마는 “책이 친구를 만든다”라는 리스본 전시에서 90권의 책을 보여줬고 10년이 지난 지금, 서울에서 272권의 책을 보여준다. 로마가 하루 아침에 이뤄지지 않았듯이, 이들이 한국의 예술과 디자인계에 어떻게 뿌리를 내릴 지 기대해본다.
