COS와 더 북 소사이어티는 2016월 7월 2일부터 10월 15일까지 협업 프로젝트를 선보인다. 더 북 소사이어티는 석 달간 COS 프로젝트 스페이스를 임시 서점이자 책 읽는 공간으로 만든다. 기획은 김영나, 구정연이 맡았다.

더 북 소사이어티는 서점이자 프로젝트 스페이스로, 다양한 종류의 시각문화 관련 책과 담론을 소개해왔다. 2009년 “THE BOOK SOCIETY: 새로운 출판 문화를 위하여”라는 아트북페어로 시작해서, 2010년 3월 상수동에 처음 공간을 열었다. 그 뒤로 두 번에 걸쳐 공간을 옮겼고 지금은 종로구 통의동 13번지 2층에 자리 잡았다. 간혹 줄여서 “북소사”라고도 불린다.

이번 프로젝트에서 더 북 소사이어티는 세 명의 작가와 함께 작업한다. 곽이브, 신신 그리고 민구홍 매뉴팩처링. 종이, 디자인, 텍스트를 실험하는 세 명의 작가는 매달 인쇄물이지만 책이라고 말하기는 어려운 작품을 생산한다.

전시장에 설치된 가구와 책은 매달 작가의 작업에 따라 조금씩 바뀐다. 곽이브의 «하늘의 구조»에서는 종이 책의 비물질적인 속성을 보여주는 책이, 신신의 «애서가 총서»에서는 동시대 예술 출판의 다양성과 실험적인 시도를
다루는 책이 소개된다. 마지막으로 민구홍 매뉴팩처링의 «보기»에서는 책을 둘러싼 기술 변화를 중심으로, 실험적인 문학의 현재를 가늠할 수 있는 책이 전시된다.

서로 다른 지점에서 책과 출판문화를 이야기하는 세 명의 작가는 더 북 소사이어티가 지향하는 책에 대한 생각을 반영한다. 작품과 책은 직간접적으로 서로 영향을 미치면서 COS 프로젝트 스페이스 안에서 기묘한 동거를 이어갈 것이다.

COS and The Book Society are presenting a joint project from July 2 to October 15, 2016. For three months, The Book Society is transforming the fourth floor project space at COS’ Cheongdam store into a temporary bookstore and reading area. Na Kim and Helen Ku will curate the series of exhibitions.

The Book Society is a bookstore and project space that works to share books and discourse related to visual culture of various kinds. Originating at the 2009 art book fair titled ‘THE BOOK SOCIETY: Creating a New Culture of Publishing,' the project opened as a space for the first time in Seoul’s Sangsu neighborhood in March 2010. It has changed locations twice since then and can currently be found on the second floor at 13 Tongui-dong in Seoul’s Jongno District. Among Koreans, its name is sometimes shortened to “ Book Sosa.”

The Book Society is working with three artists for this project: Eve Kwak, Shin Shin, and Min Guhong Manufacturing. Together, they represent a range of experiments in paper, design, and text, producing monthly publications that cannot really be described as ‘ books.'

The furniture and books arranged in the reading area will be updated from month to month with the artists’ work, reflecting each exhibition’ s orientation. For Eve Kwak’ s The Structure of Sky, the books on display represent the non-material aspects of the paper text; for Shin Shin’ s The Bibliophile’s Booklets, they are books that focus on the diversity and experimental approaches found in contemporary artistic publishing.
Finally, Min Guhong Manufacturing’s Examples will focus on examining technological changes surrounding books today and radical experiments on literature.

The three artists discuss printed works and publishing culture from different standpoints, yet all three of those points are present in the many books available at The Book Society. What unfolds next is a curious coexistence, wherein artwork and books influence each other directly and indirectly within COS’ project space.
